Progress Report since late 1979
1982 - Monmouthshire /Brecon Canal ( Crumlin Arm) handed over to Islwyn Borough Council's ownership from the British Waterways Board.
1983 - Acquisition of Equipment required for repairs and maintenance of the Canal. Also a trial length of approximately 250mtres of high density polythene lining was used.
1984 - Improvement scheme at the Drill Hall Level was carried out.
1985 - Specialist logging and ancilliary equipment purchased. Also an ex gratia payment made to the Bargoed Sub Aqua Club for undertaking specialised work on behalf of the council at the Manor Road Culvert.
1986 - Reinforced Concrete Channel at the Deeps was installed.
1987 - Also relining works done at the Deeps.
1988 - Further works carried out at the deeps.
1989 - Routine maintenance carried out.
1990 - Routine maintenance carried out.
1991 - Routine maintenance carried out.
1992 - Routine maintenance carried out.
1993 - Leak sorted out at Pontywaun.
1994 - Land adjoining the Canal dedicated to Gwent County Council as a by-way open to all traffic.
1998 - South Wales Cycle route was formed along the Canal towpath from Harry Roberts Bridge to Crosskeys was launched.
2000 - Reinstatement of the damaged section of the Canal caused by the electricity board of approx., 1km above the Welsh Oak was carried out.
2000 - L1 Risca Canal Leisure Development. The aim was to develop section from the boundary with Newport CB to Cwmcarn as a linear park providing access routes to the wider countryside and expand the formal and informal leisure use of the canal. This will encourage tourism to make a greater contribution to the local economy. Maintenance issues would be addressed. The route of the canal through Tysign may provide opportunities to link canal projects to wider social inclusion/regeneration plans for the estate. The possibility of a partnership with Wales Tourist Board and links with Groundwork was being investigated.
2001 - Slipway at Pontywaun constructed.
2001 - Retaining walls addressed.
2001 - ISLWYN CANAL ASSOCIATION FORMED
2001 - Study carried out on the whole stretch of the canal.
2001 - Risca Canal Working Group formed CCBC.
2001 - September dredging works to be carried out.
2001 - November Hydraulic assessment was being progressed to establish inflow volumes, water levels along the canal and various flood events. Also a Canal Corridor Study was undertaken.
2002 - Water leak sorted out at Pontywaun, also in September further dredging works carried out.
2003 - Dredging and Towpath Works at Manor Road to Harry Roberts Bridge to be carried out. Also the Towpath at Pontywaun.
2005 - Welsh Oak seats installed along the Canal towpath.
2006 - Interpretative Plan for the Crumlin Arm Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. Written on behalf of the Islwyn Canal Association by the Countryside and Landscape service CCBC.
2006 - Landscaping and improvements also artwork completed.
2006 - Slipway at Manor Road Risca constructed with funds won from the Peoples Millions Lottery. And officially opened by the Mayor of C.C.B.C.
2007 - Biodiversity study carried out.
2008 - Leaks at Navigation Road and at Pontywaun solved, also re-lining works and towpath improvements carried out.
2008/9 - Weeding, litter clearance carried out
2010 - Further towpath resurfacing will be carried out also Clay Paving, cycle chicanes, knee rail fencing, K barrier vehicle barrier timber fencing.
